The idea / 01
Stop asking what settings were used.

Built In Light is for photographers who understand the camera but still hesitate when the lighting, subject and frame become their responsibility. Instead of memorising a diagram, you learn how to read what the light is actually doing.

The three setups are examples, not recipes. The real goal is leaving able to diagnose a portrait, change what is not working and make the next decision yourself.

01 Light Shape, direction, distance, contrast, hardness, spill, feathering and mood.
02 Subject Pose, expression, body language, movement, eye line, hands and communication.
03 Frame Lens choice, perspective, crop, distance, composition, background and timing.

Three sets. Three different problems.

Each setup solves a different portrait problem. You see the decisions demonstrated, understand what changes the result, then take the camera and work through it yourself.

Soft commercial portrait lighting
Set 01 / Commercial · Editorial

Soft.

Large-source continuous light, clean skin, catchlights, feathering, reflector control and subtle direction that still feels natural.

Cinematic shadow portrait lighting
Set 02 / Cinematic · Dramatic

Shadow.

Negative fill, harder direction, deeper contrast and expression with more weight.

Creative fashion portrait lighting
Set 03 / Fashion · Creative

Form.

Harder light, full-body direction, movement and stronger framing decisions.

Why it works / 02

Two hours. Built to move.

The sets are ready before you arrive and the group is capped at ten. That means less setup theatre and more useful repetition: explain, demonstrate, rotate, shoot, adjust and shoot again.

Learn inside the visual world you want to make.

The workshop is grounded in the same portrait decisions used across commercial, editorial and campaign image-making: light the face, direct the person and control the frame.

Leave with pictures. Leave with understanding.

You should leave with usable images. More importantly, you should understand why they worked and what you would change on the next shoot.

01 Continuous light Direction, size, distance, hardness, feathering, reflectors, negative fill and practical light falloff.
02 Exposure & colour Aperture, shutter, ISO, Kelvin white balance, lens choice and avoiding technical decisions that kill the image.
03 Model direction Body angle, chin and jaw, hands, weight distribution, eye line, movement, expression and communication.
04 Composition Perspective, compression, working distance, background control, crop and framing with intent.

Small enough to actually shoot.

Ten photographers total, two professional models and three prepared sets. Short repeated rotations are designed to keep you shooting instead of spending the night waiting for one turn.

Your instructor / 03

Matt Roberts.

Photographer · Creative Director · MRPD

Matt teaches Built In Light from a working commercial and portrait perspective: reading the face, moving the light, choosing the frame and communicating clearly with the person in front of the camera.

The teaching is practical and visual. A concept is demonstrated, explained, then immediately put into your hands while you shoot.

Commercial, campaign, fashion and portrait photography experience.
Hands-on teaching instead of long classroom lectures.
Repeatable decision-making rather than copied camera settings.
Who it's for / 04

If manual mode is familiar, you're ready to control the portrait.

You understand aperture, shutter speed and ISO at a basic level.
You want to feel more confident directing models and people.
Studio lighting still feels more complicated than it should.
You want to understand why a portrait works, not copy somebody else's diagram.
You want portfolio-worthy shooting time, but the learning matters as much as the images.

Before you book

Quick answers.

How experienced do I need to be?
You do not need professional studio experience. You should be comfortable finding and changing aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance. The session is aimed at beginner-to-intermediate photographers.
How much is a ticket?
The current ticket price and remaining availability are shown on the booking page before you purchase. The workshop is capped at 10 photographers total.
Is it really only two hours?
Yes. The session runs 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The sets are pre-built before attendees arrive, allowing the workshop to move quickly from demonstration into shooting.
Will I actually get time to shoot?
Yes. The group is capped at 10 photographers, with two models and short repeated rotations. A major part of the session is designed around having the camera in your hands.
What camera or lens should I bring?
Any interchangeable-lens camera with manual exposure control is suitable. A 24–70mm, 50mm or 85mm lens is ideal, but you do not need to purchase equipment specifically for the workshop.
Do I need to bring lighting?
No. Lighting, modifiers, stands, backgrounds and the studio equipment used during the session are provided.
Can I use the photographs in my portfolio?
Workshop images are intended for portfolio and organic social use. Final image-use terms are supplied to attendees because model agreements can vary. Commercial advertising or third-party licensing may require separate permission.
Where is the studio?
The session is held in a professional Melbourne studio. The full address, arrival details and session information are sent directly to ticket holders.
What happens after I book?
Your booking secures one of the 10 places for Saturday 3 October 2026, 8:00–10:00 PM. Studio details, what to bring and session-specific information are sent before the workshop.
